Drowning in Plastic: How Did We Get Here, and What Can We Do About It?

We all know the feeling: you bring home a seemingly simple grocery run of fresh produce or single-ingredient items, and suddenly you're left with a mountain of plastic packaging. From the layers of film on a "fresh" cucumber to the bulky clamshell containers holding a handful of berries, plastic has infiltrated every corner of our lives—and perhaps most alarmingly, our homes.

How did we get here? It wasn't always this way. While plastic was invented in the mid-19th century, its mass production and widespread use didn't really take off until the mid-20th century. Its durability, low cost, and versatility seemed like a miracle at the time. But as we now know, that "miracle" has come with a cost.

Plastic's Takeover: A Home Invasion

Think about it: plastic isn't just in our grocery packaging. It's in our:

  • Kitchens: Food containers, utensils, wraps, storage solutions.

  • Bathrooms: Shampoo bottles, soap dispensers, toothbrushes, packaging for cotton swabs.

  • Cleaning supplies: Spray bottles, detergent jugs, sponges (often made of plastic).

  • Storage: Plastic bins, bags, and organizers (the irony!).

  • Even our furniture and decor: Many items contain plastic components or are wrapped in it during shipping.

It's a staggering amount. And while some plastic is recyclable, the reality is that a significant portion ends up in landfills, oceans, and other parts of our environment, contributing to pollution and harming wildlife.

The Overwhelm is Real

For those of us striving to create organized, peaceful homes, plastic can feel like a particularly unwelcome intruder. It clutters our spaces, creates visual chaos, and adds to the mental load of managing our belongings. How can we create a sense of calm and order when we're constantly battling a tide of plastic?
